What licenses in other provinces for construction companies?

Laws and regulations vary somewhat from province to province, but in general they all follow the same guidelines.

 

Here are the various licensing requirements you will need in each province and territory in Canada.

 

Alberta

In Alberta, a prepaid contractor must have a license issued through Service Alberta . The people of ”  designated trades  »(Gas fitters, plumbers, electricians, etc.) must have their Certificate of competence , which they get through Alberta Advanced Education .

Some municipalities require electricians to obtain additional licenses and permits. Building permit requirements vary in accordance with regulations set out in the building code of Alberta, gas code and the plumbing code .

 

British Columbia

The Industry Training Authority  in British Columbia regulates and oversees trades in the province. All the people of ”  regulated trades  »Must have their certificate of competence . Electricians, gas fitters, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics, and home builders must all have their own permits to work in their distinctive specialty.

If your business builds single-family homes, as a Certified Residential Builder you will need to obtain a building permit from British Columbia and a mandatory guarantee for each of the projects you undertake .

 

Prince Edward Island

The government of Prince Edward Island oversees all trades in the province. All workers in compulsory-certificate trades must have their Certificate of competence . Construction electricians and plumbers must have a Licence , to be certified and hold the appropriate permits before working in their distinctive specialty. Heating tank installers and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics must also have their own certificate of competence and have a Licence .

 

Manitoba

Trades requiring compulsory certification (bricklayers, electromechanics, plumbing mechanics, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics, oil burner mechanics and others) are regulated under the Apprenticeship and Professional Recognition Act . Trades people must obtain a Certificate of competence and the respective licenses required to work in their distinctive specialty.

Some municipalities require tradespeople to obtain specific electrical wiring, plumbing and construction permits in order to work in their territory.

 

New Brunswick

New Brunswick does not require a license for most tradespeople except for electricians, plumbers and pressure gas workers. However, competency certificates are required for all trades.

 

New Scotland

The Labor and Workforce Development Office  regulates and regulates trades in Nova Scotia. Trades people (bricklayers, oil heating system technicians, plumbers, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics, construction electrical workers, gas fitters) must have their certificate of competence and their apprenticeship certificate to be able to work in the province.

Gas fitters and electricians need additional licenses and permits before starting any work. Building permits vary from municipality to municipality.

 

Ontario

The Ontario College of Trades (OMO, or OCT in English) regulates and supervises trades in the province and is responsible for issuing competency certificates trades requiring compulsory certification, even if the Office for the Safety of Electrical Installations and the Electrical Contractor Association  supervise electricians in the province.

The Ontario College of Trades prosecute and severely penalize unregistered or uncertified tradespeople. All tradespeople must have their own certificate of competence , while electricians must have a electrical contractor’s license . Some plumbers must also have their Licence . City bylaws dictate the permit requirements for individual projects.

 

Saskatchewan

The Ministry of Government Relations certifies gas fitters and electricians, while the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission  regulates all other trades in the province.

All people working in trades requiring compulsory certification must have their certificate of competence , while electricians, plumbers and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics must be certified in both bodies. Permits for electricity, gas and construction depend on municipal regulations.

 

Newfoundland and Labrador

The Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division  regulates and oversees trades in the province and requires tradespeople to hold a certificate of competence and the Licence appropriate to work in their respective field of expertise.

Electricians must have their entrepreneur registration certificate and one electricity work permit to be able to work in the province. Some municipalities have their own additional permit requirements.

 

Northwest Territories and Nunavut

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Training regulates trades throughout the Northwest Territories, while Family Services and Housing Learning Unit is responsible for Nunavut. People working in compulsory trades must have their own certificate of competence.

Of additional licenses are required for electromechanics and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics, and permit are needed for individual projects. Permit requirements (construction, occupancy and plumbing) depend on municipal bylaws.

 

Yukon

The Ministry of Education certifies trades in the Yukon, where all tradespeople must hold their certificate of competence . Regulated trades include  : gas fitters, electromechanics and oil burner mechanics. Gas fitters must have a Licence . All entrepreneurs must have a valid contractor’s license .

The building permit (which include plumbing) are required throughout the territory. The permit for electricity are required, but are accessible to both professionals and qualified owners. Permit regulations are specific to municipalities.
