Quote, invoicing, payroll … Are you familiar with the new hourly rates?

Define that your work is part of the residential sector

In order to quote, invoice or pay accurately, you must first make sure that the work is done in the residential sector.

In fact, to benefit from the advantages of the collective agreement in the residential sector, it is essential to declare the hours in the correct sector.

The Act respecting labor relations, vocational training and workforce management in the construction industry (R-20) defines the residential sector as follows:

The construction sector of buildings or groups of adjoining buildings, including installations and equipment physically attached or not to these buildings, of which at least 85% of the area, excluding that of any parking space, is reserved for the dwelling and where the number of floors above the ground, excluding any part of the basement and view from any face of the building or of the group of buildings, does not exceed six in the case of new buildings or eight in all other cases.

Determine if it is light or heavy residential

To determine whether it is light or heavy residential, you must refer to the new definitions explained in the 2017-2021 collective agreement for the residential sector.

Light residential construction:

Refers to the construction of any building in the residential sector, including installations and equipment physically attached to it or not, which does not fall under heavy residential construction, as defined in article 1.01 10 below:

Heavy residential construction:

Refers to the new construction of any building in the residential sector, including the installations and equipment physically attached to it or not, including the number of floors above ground, seen from at least one facade and excluding any space of parking, is greater than four, also including the modification and renovation of existing buildings of more than six floors.

Difference between wage rates for workers

You are, for example, a journeyman carpenter-joiner.

If you work in the heavy residential sector, your wage rate is $42.01 /hour.

And if you work in the light residential sector, your wage rate is $38.54 /hour.

Check that your payslip indicates the correct wage rate, corresponding to that of the sector in which you worked.
