The holder of a general owner-builder license carries out or causes to be carried out, on his property or properties, work to meet his own needs and not to profit from the actual execution of the construction work. In simpler terms, the owner-builder does not perform construction work for clients.

The person who builds a ten-story building to rent out the apartments in that building is an owner-builder. On the other hand, if he builds a ten-storey condominium building for the purpose of selling units of this building, he is considered a building contractor.
